His technique has evolved after many years of research and the use of a gentle touch that combines Japanese and Western styles of endoscopy. For maximum patient safety and comfort, sedation is given and the procedure is performed in a hospital setting. Oxygen is administered and continuous monitoring of blood oxygen levels and pulse rate is routine. Some patients prefer to have the procedure done awake and this request can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis. Without sedation, “awake” gastroscopy and colonoscopy may be slightly uncomfortable but tolerable. This painless technique has been requested particularly by fellow doctors and by patients who demand no sedation and yet do not mind a mild degree of discomfort.
