Dr Tan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1989. He obtained his surgical fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1994. He did his Orthopaedic Residency from 1995 to 1998. He did a year of fellowship in Sports Orthopaedics at the Fowler Kennedy Sports Medicine Clinic, Ontario, Canada in 1998-1999 and was admitted to be a Fellow of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. In 1999, he obtained a Diploma in Sports Medicine from the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine
Dr Tan started and headed the Changi Sports Medicine Centre before leaving for private practice. He was appointed Director of the Singapore Soft Tissue Engineering Project in 2002 by the Ministry of Health, Singapore to study the clinical application of cartilage transplant and meniscal transplant in Singapore. As the Director, he did the first successful meniscus transplant in South East Asia using cadaveric allograft and is instrumental in the clinical application of cartilage transplantation. He started the Changi Skills Training Laboratory and was Course Chairman of the 1st Cartilage Transplant Course in South East Asia.
Dr Tan was a Clinical Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore and won the Changi General Hospital Best Teacher in 2003 for his contribution to undergraduate and post-graduate teaching. He is a member of the Medical Committee, Football Association Singapore as well as Committee Member of the Medical Committee of Outward Bound School, Singapore. In addition, he is the Visiting Consultant to Singapore Sports Council and Changi General Hospital. He is currently a Member of the Sports Medicine Accreditation Committee, Joint Commission Specialist Training and was a Member of the Specialty Board, Chapter of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Academy of Medicine. He was the Immediate Past President of the Sports Medicine Association of Singapore.
Besides involvement in clinical works, Dr Tan is also active in the local sporting scene. He is the Team Physician to the Singapore national soccer team. Besides looking after local national athletes, he also looks after leading athletes in the region.
