Dr Tan Hiok Hee is a dermatologist with expertise in various aspects of medical and cosmetic dermatology. He has published extensively, with more than 80 peer reviewed journal articles, as well as chapters in textbooks of dermatology as well as sexually transmitted infections.
He was formerly a Senior Consultant and Assistant Director at the National Skin Centre, Singapore. He helmed the Department of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Control and was also Chief of the Cutaneous Infections unit at NSC, and the Consultant in charge of the Acne clinic. He is now a visiting consultant with the Centre.
He also received the “Best Research Paper” award from the Dermatological Society of Singapore for 3 consecutive years. In 2001, Dr Tan completed a fellowship with St Johns’ Institute of Dermatology and the Department of Genitourinary Medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas Hospital Trust in London, UK under the Ministry of Health’s Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP). Dr Tan went on to specialize in cutaneous infections and sexually transmitted infections, becoming a Consultant in 2002 and a Senior Consultant in 2006. He was appointed of Head of DSC clinic in 2005.
He is also Honorary Secretary of the Chapter of Dermatologists, Academy of Medicine, Singapore and a member of the Dermatological Society of Singapore. He is a regular reviewer for various journals and is joint editor for the journal Sexual Health.
Dr Tan has been invited to speak and chair sessions at numerous local, regional and international forums and congresses, including the 2007 and 2011 World Congress of Dermatology. He is an acknowledged key opinion leader in various aspects of dermatology including acne, various skin infections and sexually transmitted infections and is much sought after on the lecture circuit. He is often extensively quoted in the local press.
To date, Dr Tan has published over 90 academic papers and has authored chapters in various text and reference books on dermatology and venereology. He was Chairman of the 2009 Ministry of Health Clinical Practice Guidelines group on “Management of Anogenital Ulcers and Discharges” and has authored various therapeutic guidelines.
Dr Tan has received many accolades in his career, including the National Healthcare Group’s ‘Quality Pillar’ and multiple NSC service quality awards for consistently excellent patient care. In 2005, his team was awarded the third prize and again, in 2008, the second prize, for Best Research Paper from the Singapore Medical Journal
He continues to share his expertise on various forums and lectures to medical students, nurses, family physicians and fellow dermatologists.
