MBChB, MRCP (UK)
Consultant Cardiologist, Interventional Cardiologist
Co-Director of Interventional Cardiology Service
Dr Tan Chong Hiok graduated from Leicester University (UK) in 1989. He then underwent training in various subspecialties and completed his cardiology training in 1999. After which, he went over to Sydney, Australia to hone his skills in echocardiology. During the 1 year stay, he also published several papers in this subspecialty. He is an accredited Echocardiologist certified to perform 2D echo, Treadmill stress echo, Dobutamine stress echo and Transoesophageal echocardiography. All his echo scans done in the clinic are personally vetted or performed.
After his sabbatical in Sydney, he returned to Singapore and worked in Changi General Hospital. During this time he also took up training in interventional cardiology. He left for a second sabbatical to Seoul, Korea, to further develop his skills in angioplasty. The centre he trained in is one of the world’s leaders in stenting the Left Main artery.
Upon returning to Singapore, Dr Tan Chong Hiok spearheaded intervention via the radial approach in Changi General Hospital. He has given many presentations in international meetings. He also has extensive experience in performing stenting of the left main artery and chronic total occlusion (arteries which have been completely blocked for a long time also known as CTO). He also has a great wealth of experience in doing complex cases in patients who declined bypass surgery (what is the difference between bypass surgery and stenting).
Hence, Dr Tan Chong Hiok is considered to be one of the best physicians in terms of angioplasty skills in Singapore and has won a prestigious award in a global interventional event called the CTO Club.
Currently, Dr. Tan is the only cardiologist in Singapore who has undergone accredited training both in Echocardiology and Interventional Cardiology.
Being duo-accredited, Dr. Tan’s patients are assured of a well-balanced opinion. Maintaining a link with the academic centres also ensures that he remains on the cutting edge of technologies. Dr. Tan is still actively involved in research and teaching. He returns to the public institutions regularly to supervise, teach and perform both echo and interventional cases. He is also an invited faculty member for various international conferences such as Asia PCR, TCTAP.
