Prof Mahesh Choolani is one of Singapore’s leading Obstetricians & Gynaecologists with a special interest in high-risk pregnancy care and fetal medicine. He believes deeply that the best patient outcomes are delivered by clinicians who care for their patients as if they were family: that each patient should be treated as if she were a sister, a mother or a daughter.
He impresses the same ideals upon the young doctors he interacts with everyday. Prof Choolani is faculty lecturer at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. As Associate Professor and Senior Consultant in the department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, he leads the High-Risk Pregnancy Unit of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division at the National University Hospital (NUH).

Professor (Dr) Choolani maintains an active academic role, heading the Reproductive and Developmental Biology Programme at NUS, where all research is specifically directed to benefit patients and better women’s health. One of his team’s most recent and notable breakthroughs is FlashFISH™, a rapid diagnostic test performed at amniocentesis that can detect Down’s Syndrome in unborn babies within a few hours – this technology has put Singapore on the world map as being the first country to offer Same-Day Prenatal Diagnosis.
He and his team have won numerous prizes internationally for their pioneering research in women’s health, and he has received substantial grant funding to pursue his research to better the health of women in Singapore and the world over. He has published over 100 articles describing his work, and in 2010, he received the Benjamin Henry Sheares Memorial Lecture Award for his outstanding work in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Dr Choolani believes that with knowledge must come humility and responsibility. He feels that all of us have a very specific purpose in life: our tour of duty. As a student of medicine it is his duty to be knowledgeable both in the art and skill of surgery as well as the science of life, health and disease. As a doctor, it is his duty to cure, comfort and care. As a teacher, it is his duty to motivate and inspire the next generation to push the frontiers of medicine even further. As a son, husband and father it is his duty to love. As a human being, it is his duty to serve humanity with love, compassion and excellence.
