Dr. Kamal Bose is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre. Dr. Bose graduated from medical school in 1961 and did his initial post graduate training at ALL INDIA INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL SCIENCE, NEW DELHI. He continued his orthopaedic training in U.K. ( Oswestry Liverpool), FRANCE (Paris, Lyon and Marcey), and NORTH AMERICA (Boston, Toronto and Palo Alto (Stanford) He joined the University of Singapore in 1971 and was appointed to the Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery in the year 1981. He continued to hold that position till 1999.
He was initially the head of Orthopaedic Surgery of University Department at Singapore General Hospital and was subsequently instrumental in starting the Orthopaedic Department at National University Hospital. He continued to head that Department from its inception to 1999. He held various senior positions in the hospital and in the university during his tenure.
He had been a Guest Lecturer and Guest Speaker at many international conferences and seminars and was a visiting Professor to many universities including Stanford Medical School and Tokyo Medical School and many others. For his contribution in developing close co-operation between French Universities and National University of Singapore he was awarded the ‘Chevalier dans l’ordes des Palmes Academiques’ by French Government.
Dr. Bose was the Founder President of the Biomedical Engineering Society of Singapore. He was past President of Asia Pacific Orthopaedic Association. He is a member of American Orthopaedic Association, British Orthopaedic Association, Japanese Orthopaedic Association and many others.
He is also a member of many International ‘Speciality Organisation’ like:
- Knee & Arthroscopy Society
- International Society of Lumbar Spine
- North American Paediatric Orthopaedic Society
- and many others.
Dr. Bose had published more than 300 research papers. He had been a guest speaker in many international meetings in North America/Europe and Asia Pacific Region conducting workshops and seminars on various aspects of orthopaedic. He is a reviewer for peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, Journal of Paediatric Orthopaedics, Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research and Journal of Musculo-Skeletal Research.
His community services are many, including serving as Chairman, Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore; management committee member of Society for Aid to the Paralysed and Member, Rehabilitation International, Red Cross Home and also Board Member of NCSS. He also held various posts as chairman and member of medical and charity organizations. He was the recipient of the Meritorious Service award by the Singapore Red Cross Society in 1979 and also the National Day Award in 1985, among many other awards. He has been actively involved in conducting ‘Medical Camps’ for the needy particularly in India for over the last 20 years.
