Adj Asst Professor Dr. Ben Ng Jen Min graduated from the Queens University of Belfast Northern Ireland, United Kingdom (UK). He completed his postgraduate training with the certificate of completion of training (CCT) from the Royal College of Physicians (UK) with dual accreditation in diabetes and endocrinology and in general internal medicine. In 2010, he was awarded an MD with honours by the University of Hull, UK, in recognition for his research in diabetes mellitus.
Upon his return to Singapore the following year, he worked as a full time consultant endocrinologist in Changi General Hospital for 3 years, during which time, he was appointed as Assistant Adjunct Professor in research at Duke-NUS, the region’s premier graduate medical school, and also acted as a clinical tutor under the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, Singapore.
His medical expertise encompasses a wide range of endocrinological problems including diabetes mellitus, obesity and thyroid disorders as well as androgen, reproductive, adrenal and pituitary disease. Dr Ng has a special interest in patients with diabetes mellitus and thyroid disease.
In the area of diabetes, his particular interest lie in the early stages of glucose intolerance, patients with Type 1 diabetes and those who require intensive insulin therapy. He is skilled in the initiation and treatment of patients requiring insulin pump and continuous glucose monitoring systems. Dr Ng is trained in the usage of the thyroid ultrasound and in fine needle biopsy of the thyroid gland. He has an interest in autoimmune thyroid disease and pregnant patients with thyroid disease.
Following his involvement in the Dose Adjustment for Normal Eating (DAFNE) programme, a robust educational programme for patients with Type 1 Diabetes during his training in the UK, he designed the Living with Diabetes: Diet and Lifestyle (LiDDLe) programme upon his return to Singapore. The programme, which is designed to better suit Asian diets and needs, is currently running in Changi General Hospital in conjunction with the University of Chester in the United Kingdom.
As an accredited diabetes doctor in Singapore, Dr Ng works alongside the community to combat the rise of diabetes in the local population. He was the programme director for the Eastern Community Health Outreach (ECHO), a health intervention community based programme aimed at reducing the incidence of diabetes in East Singapore.
He also served as the Vice President of the Diabetic Society of Singapore (DSS), a non-profitable organisation aimed at promoting awareness, supporting and reducing the risks of diabetes mellitus in Singapore. He frequently speaks at events organised by DSS and Touch Diabetes and is a regular invited columnist for their publications.
Dr Ng has been invited to speak in many international meetings all over the world including Taipei, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, China, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. The prolific endocrinologist has presented more than 30 posters and oral presentations in conferences worldwide. He has also had his research work published in more than 20 international peer reviewed journals.
Dr Ng’s works have also been cited in more than 100 scientific articles. He has also been awarded several research grants from Diabetes UK, Ministry of Health Singapore and SingHealth.
