Dr Benjamin Chua is a Singapore-based Vascular and Endovascular Surgeon who is presently the Medical Director and Senior Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Vascular & Interventional Centre. Dr Chua has many years of specialist experience in treating all vascular conditions. Prior to setting up the Vascular & Interventional Centre, Dr Chua was instrumental as the Founding Head in setting up the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the first island-wide independent clinical department dedicated to caring for patients with vascular conditions. Under his leadership, the department grew to a team of 9 vascular surgeons and 6 vascular technologists who worked closely with advance wound care nurses and podiatrists. The department cared for more than 10,000 outpatients and performed more than 5000 vascular ultrasound scans and 2000 surgeries per year. During his tenure at SGH, Dr Chua was also instrumental in advancing the use of minimally invasive endovascular surgical techniques. He helped advance new procedures in aortic aneurysm repair, angioplasty and stenting for peripheral arterial disease, and varicose vein surgery.
While at SGH, Dr Chua also served as the Director of the Alexander Chao Vascular and Endovascular Surgical Skills Platform under the Division of Surgery Surgical Skills Centre. Dr Chua was also the Deputy Director of the Device Development Office, Academic Clinical Programme in Surgery under Singhealth. He also chaired the Evidence-Based Medicine Committee of the Division of Surgery at SGH. He continues to serve as an Alternate Member of the SingHealth Centralized Instituional Review Board. Dr Chua also continues to maintain his academic position as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore. Since 2006, he has also served as the Honorary Treasurer of the Vascular Surgical Society (Singapore).
Dr Chua graduated MBBS from the National University of Singapore in 2000. In 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Singapore National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Fellowship Training Award to pursue the Clinical Research Training Programme at Duke University of Medicine in Durham, North Carolina. While at Duke, he also served as a research fellow at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, focusing his research on lower limb peripheral vascular disease in the dialysis dependent populations as well as in the development of randomized trials in surgery. Dr Chua obtained his MHSc in Clinic Research from Duke University in 2003.
In 2005, Dr Chua was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and in 2008, as a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The following year, Dr Chua was awarded the prestigious Higher Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) award by National Healthcare Group and Ministry of Health, Singapore. As part of this award, Dr Chua served as the Honorary Vascular Surgery Clinical Fellow in Advanced Endovascular Surgery at the St Vincent’s Hospital and Epworth Hospital in Melbourne Australia from 2009 to 2010. During this time, he trained under the personal tutelege of Professor Michael Denton of University of Melbourne, a renown pioneer in advanced aortic stent grafts, fenestrated devices and peripheral interventions.
Regarded as one of the leading vascular surgeons in Asia, Dr Chua travels extensively in the Asia Pacific region to teach and proctor complex aortic stenting, peripheral vascular interventions and endovenous surgery. He is also regularly invited to sit on the faculty and speak at numerous regional and international vascular conferences.
In his effort to improve clinical care for patients with vascular diseases, Dr Chua is also actively involved in vascular device development and research. He has received multiple grants from A*STAR and SMART amounting to more than S$5 million in addition to holding patents and invention disclosures for novel vascular surgery devices.
